LOVING A GOD YOU DO NOT KNOW

DAT
A DRIVEN SOCIETY
The bible encourages us to “walk by faith and not by sight”, however, we live in a data driven society; seeing for us is, believing!
“Seeing” requires data entry through one or multiple input formats. Data, although having been around for more than five centuries, still lacks a unified definition, however, most agree that data is a collection of strings and variables on which a program is executed and algorithms formed. In simple terms, a collection of data (raw facts) forms information.
We are presently living in a data-driven society – in which our real world and data accumulation and/or automation are linked in sophisticated and seemly natural ways. A data-driven society may here by defined as one that uses data (raw facts) for more efficient, decentralized decision-making to create new services, enable faster, better quality and more efficient decision-making.
EFFECT OF LACK OF DATA
Evidently, data determines the course of most our lives as much as it does computer and automated machine/systems. It’s quite possible to iterate that without directions from data, we become almost entirely paralyzed.
We use data to decide and locate the best place to eat, shop, research, get medical care etc. Given our data-driven society, with its sophisticated links between data and real-world activity, the quality and speed of our decision-making has exponentially improved – arguably improving our quality of life.
Therefore, the more data acquired, the better our choices and output functionality. The adage “look before you leap” is almost subconsciously practiced by all, so much that pastors look to the internet of things (IoT) for what to preach, how to preach and when to preach, doctors look to online videos and materials on how best to attend to patients and cases, daily young people search for purpose and answers to varying life questions from the internet, exploring every possible suggestions there is, almost to common demise.
Summarily, data is life. The bible appears to support this concept, for it declares in proverbs 11:14; 15:22 and Hosea 4:6 “in the multitude of counselors, there is safety” “my people perish for lack of knowledge”.
IS THERE SUFFICIENT DATA ABOUT GOD?
In light of the above, how then can we (living in a data-driven society) truly love a God we do not know or know so much about? There appears to be insufficient data on God and although the Jesus encourages us that “blessed are ye when you believe when you have not seen” yet, how can we do this in today’s data-driven society?
WHAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT GOD
If all data-driven facts, points to a beginning of all things, and a wide acceptance of cause and effect, many scholars have attempted squashing the concept of God by asking; who can tell the origin of God?, Where did God come from?
Let’s examine the facts (data):
- WHAT WE DO KNOW ABOUT GOD
It is easy to glean from the Holy scriptures that, data of God’s existence being conspicuous and encapsulated in mystery, although made evident in bits both through creation and through man’s conscience, that the Bible calls the unbeliever a “fool” (Psalm 14:1).
Nevertheless, the Bible never attempts to prove the existence of God; rather, it simply assumes His existence from the very beginning (Genesis 1:1). The data we can extract from the Bible is the revelation of the nature, character, and work of God.
In Psalm 50:21, we find God reproving the wicked man with “You thought I was altogether like you.” Hence the quarry – what do we know about God?
- His Nature: The bible shares insight to the nature of God that He is a spirit, by nature intangible (John 4:24). God is also One – although He exists as three Persons—God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17). God is also infinite (1 Timothy 1:17), incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22), and unchanging (Malachi 3:6). Lastly, God exists everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12), knows everything (Psalm 147:5; Isaiah 40:28), and has all power and authority (Ephesians 1; Revelation 19:6).
- His Character: There are some of God’s characteristics revealed in the Bible such as – God is just (Acts 17:31), loving (Ephesians 2:4-5), truthful (John 14:6), and holy (1 John 1:5). God is compassionate (2 Corinthians 1:3), merciful (Romans 9:15), and gracious (Romans 5:17). God judges sin righteously (Psalm 5:5) but also offers forgiveness bountifully (Psalm 130:4).
- His Work: It is almost impossible to understand God apart from His works, because what God does flows from who He is.
This speaks volume to the truth that we believe what we see, where action speaks louder than words; faith is not intangible believe in the unknown, faith is anchored on the certainty of God’s word – what He has said and done in the past, present and future.
Here is a summarized data on God’s works, past, present, and future: God created the world (Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 42:5) hence God is a creator; God actively sustains the world (Colossians 1:17) hence God is a sustainer; God is executing His eternal plan (Ephesians 1:11) which involves the redemption of man from the curse of sin and death (Galatians 3:13-14) hence God is a redeemer; God draws people to Christ and sanctifies them by the blood of Christ(John 6:44) God is a sanctifier; God disciplines His children (Hebrews 12:6), hence God is a good shepherd; and God will judge the world (Revelation 20:11-15), hence God is a just judge.
- His personality: perhaps, the greatest revelation and data on God is found only in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the Person of the Son, God became incarnate (John 1:14). The Son of God became the Son of Man and therefore qualified as a “bridge” between God and man (John 14:6; 1Timothy 2:5).
It is only through the Jesus Christ, the Son of God that we can have forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), reconciliation with God (John 15:15; Romans 5:10), and eternal salvation (2 Timothy 2:10). Through Jesus Christ “all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form” (Colossians 2:9).
Therefore, to really know who God is, all we have to do is look at Jesus. Every necessary data about God is expressly revealed in Jesus. No wonder when the disciples asked “show us the Father” Jesus responded that if they had known Him (Christ), they would have known the Father, for He and the Father are one.
RUNNING WITH THE AVALIABLE DATA
In light of the foregoing, the title of this material “loving a God you do not know” appears to be founded on wrong speculations as there are so much data about God revealed in the scriptures, in nature and in the live, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. No wonder the apostle Paul, speaking on faith, says “faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God”.
We can know God on a personal level for He promises that “ye shall seek me and find me, when you seek me with all of your heart” God wants to be known, when Moses asked to see God’s face, God honored his request by causing His glory to pass before Him and while we may not fully know how to interpret that, yet we can taste and see for ourselves; the goodness of God.
So, what does it mean to “walk by faith and not by sight”? I argue that it means trusting the process even when it doesn’t make sense, it means holding on to what is revealed in light of God’s word even when it seems like everything else in our lives is covered in gross darkness.
Walking by faith and not by sight is watching those three Hebrew boys stare into the fiery furnace as it was heated seven times over while they declared boldly not to compromise their allegiance to God even if it meant that God was not going to swoop in and save the day.
CONCLUSION
No matter the research methodology, we can never know enough, at the end of the day, we all apply a certain level of faith in all of our day to day choices, no matter the information on the website, the 5 star ratings on that app, we still have to show a level of solidary when we make our order, trusting them to deliver with excellence and speed just as they are advertised to be.
If we can trust machines to do their jobs given the programs that have been put into their systems and how much data flows through their networks, if we can place our confidence in man led agencies to do just what they advertise to be every time; how much more God who has never for once forsaken His own? How much God who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond what we can ever think or imagine?
APPEAL
Dear friend, you cannot love a God you don’t know, it takes knowledge to love, nevertheless, the God of heaven and earth is only “unknown” to those who are covered in darkness and unbelieve, God longs to open your eyes up to who He is and who you are and can be in Him.
The book of Revelation declares that even now, Christ stands at the door of your heart, seeking a personal relationship with you, ready to answer and all of your questions, ready to give you peace amidst your bitter storm, ready to take away your pain, ready to give you strength for the climb, ready to forgive you and take away the guilt, shame and anxiety; will you let Him in?
