Staying Rooted in God – Even on the Toughest Days

Life gets crazy – and it’s getting crazier by the day.

Work, school, family, social life – it’s no wonder that getting time with God seems like an impossible task.

And don’t even get started on the days when your schedule gets even more packed – everything just sort of gets pushed to one side.

You start off alright, thinking “I’ll definitely fit in some prayer time today”, but somehow the day just slips away.

Ever feel like this? – You’re not alone in that feeling.

But here’s the good news – spiritual consistency is very definitely achievable, even if your life is flat out busy.

1. Start Small & Just Keep Going

Making the mistake of trying to cram too much in all at once is a common one.

One minute you’re not praying at all & the next you’re thinking “I’ll just have a 1 hour prayer session every day” – and, fair play, that might work for a few days… but then you know what happens next.

So, instead of trying to do loads, why not just start with something tiny.

5 minutes of prayer.
Just one chapter of the Bible.
A short bit of worship.

Intensity doesn’t matter as much as just showing up.

Jesus said that the person who’s good at doing a little bit now, will be good at doing loads more later (Luke 16:10).

2. Make God Part of Your Daily Routine

Don’t wait for some mythical “perfect time” to catch up with God, just try & fit him into the bits of your day that you already do.

Pray while you’re getting ready in the morning.
Catch a sermon while you’re on the way to work.
Read a bit of scripture before you go to bed.

The more you do this, the easier it becomes to just naturally do this all the time – it’s not something you have to make time for – it’s just part of what you do.

3. Create A Little Sanctuary For Yourself

You don’t need some grand altar, just a spot where you can call home for a bit.

It could be that corner of your room, or a chair by the window – or even just somewhere quiet on the couch for a few minutes.

What’s important is that you don’t get distracted – just give your full attention.

That space becomes a kind of anchor for you – a place where you can instantly switch on to God.

4. Stay Connected with Other People Who Are On This Journey Too

The thing is about growing spiritually is that you don’t do it in isolation – it’s a team effort.

When you surround yourself with people who are all trying to do the same thing, it makes it a heck of a lot easier to stay on track.

Join a church group, get connected with a fellowship, or have some friends who are all in it with you.

Hebrews 10:25 says not to just give up on meeting up with other believers – but to keep on encouraging each other.

5. Be Kind to Yourself & Don’t Give Up

Days will come when you just plain miss it – when you feel knackered, or just not feeling it.

That’s alright.

What matters is that you don’t get discouraged & give up.

Don’t let one bad day turn into a week – or months off from God.

God’s not standing there waiting to pounce on you when you slip up – He’s just waiting to welcome you back with open arms.

Final Thoughts

Spiritual consistency is not about being some kind of super-saint – it’s just about showing up day after day.

God’s not asking for hours you don’t have – He’s asking for your heart.

So, wherever you are on your journey today, just take a small step. Pray a little, read a verse, talk to Him a bit.

And the more you keep at it, the more you’ll see that He’s been there all along.
